History of the College of Computer Studies

On May 24, 2001, the College of Information Technology and Engineering was split into the College of Computer Studies and the College of Engineering. Atty. Manuel O. Diaz Jr. was appointed as Dean of the College of Computer Studies . The reasons for the split were (1) expansion and (2) to develop its strength in computer-related academic areas and its own research agenda which are quite different form the thrust of the engineering department. It was envisioned that the separation of Computer Studies from Engineering would promote the said areas of development.

The programs under the College are BS Computer Science, BS Information Management, BS Information Technology and BS Digital Illustration and Animation.

On April 18, 2002, a new academic department was created under the College of Computer Studies , the Department of Digital Illustration and Animation. This new department was created to administer the BS in Digital Illustration and Animation because the requirements of the DIA program are specialized. It demands graphics-optimized computing facilities, as it requires highly-skilled faculty. Both faculty and students of the DIA program must have a basic inclination in the arts. On the other hand, the mainstream Computer Studies programs, particularly Computer Science and Information Technology, are more technically-oriented. This fundamental difference in the orientation may, in the near future, serve to stifle the growth of the other. Mr. Diaz believes that the DIA program can better take off and pursue its own direction if it is empowered with an equal footing under the College. A separate academic department would specifically look into the needs and evaluate the position of the BS Digital Illustration and Animation program to better address its needs and concerns, as well as propel its growth.

On September 5, 2002 through University Memorandum No. 295, the proposal of the College of Computer Studies to rename its Department of Computer Studies the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Digital Illustration and Animation the Department of Digital Arts and Computer Animation was approved.

Starting School Year 2007-2008, the B.S. in Information Systems program is offered by the College through the department of computer science.
