On 23 January 2010, Efren Peñaflorida, '09 CNN Hero of the Year and Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) Pioneer, will visit the Ateneo de Naga University as part of the launching of the first local replication of the "Kariton Klasrum Klinik and Kantin," also known as "K4" or "Kariton (Pushcart) Education." The CNN Hero will give a talk at 10:00 AM at the University Gym. A Eucharistic celebration and blessing of karitons will also be held at 4:30 PM at the University Church. There will also be an official launching of the program (through the organization GIRA: Footsteps to Genuine Change) at 6:00 PM at the Plaza Quezon.
In a country riddled with great poverty and corruption, Efren Peñaflorida provides a ray of hope to the Filipino Youth. Together with his group of DTC volunteers, Mr. Peñaflorida roams around the various sites in Cavite pushing a customized Kariton equipped with teaching materials to provide education to children.
His efforts were honored when the international news channel CNN awarded him with the Hero of the Year award last 22 November 2009 at the Kodak Theater.
