Ms. Padmini Iyer, a sophomore from Oxford University , recently visited Ateneo de Naga University (AdNU) for an internship under the University Social Involvement Council and the Knowledge for Development Center . She arrived on July 21 and stayed up to August 15, 2008.
During her stay, Ms. Iyer joined the AdNU – Pathways Youth Group (PYG) as they planned and started their teaching program in Calabanga. She also tagged along AdNU's Center for Community Development (CCD) in their area visits and outreach activities, which included a feeding program and delivery of goods to Sangay, Buhi, Cabusao and Calabanga. Furthermore, she helped plant trees with Japanese student volunteers, who, too, were visiting the university and AdNU's Tabang Atenista Organization. Towards the end of her stay, she shared some reading modules with PYG members and gave a lecture entitled English in Oxford for the English majors in the university.
“Coming to Naga and staying at the Ateneo has been the perfect opportunity to realize what Social Development actually involves on a day-to-day basis…I have been more inspired to dedicate myself to development work,” Ms. Iyer wrote in her reflection paper on her stay in the Philippines.
Ms.Iyer finally shared that, due to her deep interest in social development, she plans to embark on a career in International Development after she graduates.
